My website embed is blank or doesn't appear

Why your Chirp's chat doesn't show on your website, stays empty or shows a message instead of chatting, and how to fix each cause.

EssentialsCreatorBusinessAcademyFor: Account owner, Workspace admin, Editor, Viewer, Visitors

When you're done, your Chirp's chat shows on your website and answers visitors.

Who this is for: anyone who put a Chirp on a website with its Embed code, when visitors see no chat button, an empty box, or a message instead of the chat. Fixing the Chirp needs someone who can edit it. Fixing the website needs access to the website's settings.

What you see

On your website, nothing works:

  • No chat button in the corner, and no chat box on the page.
  • A button or a box that stays empty or white, or says "Loading…".

A card inside the chat box, instead of the chat:

  • "Chirp not found", with "This link may be wrong, or the Chirp isn't shared anymore."
  • The Chirp's name, with "This Chirp is taking a short break. Please check back later."
  • The Chirp's name, with "This Chirp is temporarily unavailable. Please check back later."
  • The Chirp's name, with "This Chirp isn't connected to an AI service yet. Please check back soon."
  • "This Chirp needs an access code.", a password, or an email step.

Inside your website, these cards have no Go home button, so visitors aren't sent away from your page.

What a chat box on a website shows for a draft, an archived Chirp or a wrong address.

A page that didn't load: "This page didn't load", with "Your browser may be blocking this site from saving data. Allow it for chirpbuilder.com, then try again."

In the Embed window (click Embed at the top of the editor), a note at the top (1) says when the embed can't show the chat yet:

  • "This Chirp is a draft. Publish it (Unlisted or Public) and the embed will show it. Embeds always show the published version."
  • "This Chirp is archived, so the embed shows "Chirp not found". Bring it back from the archive to show it."
  • "This Chirp is paused, so the embed shows a short break message until you turn off Pause this Chirp and save."
  • "Website embedding comes with every Chirp Builder plan.", with See plans: the account has no plan.

Under the two choices, a hint (2) says "The floating button needs a site that allows scripts. If yours doesn't, choose Inline chat and use the code without scripts."

The note (1) says why the embed can't show the chat; the hint (2) is for sites that don't allow scripts.

Find the cause

  1. Open the Embed window. If there's a note at the top, start there: it names the cause.
  2. Click Preview the embedded chat. It opens the chat on its own, the way your website loads it.
  3. Look at your live website, not the site builder's editor. Many site builders don't run added code in their editor or preview.

The Chirp isn't published, or is archived

Embeds always show the published version, so a draft or an archived Chirp shows "Chirp not found".

It works the next time the website page loads. You don't need new code.

The Chirp is paused or can't answer

Visitors who see a card need to reload the page after you fix it.

The website removed or blocks the code

The chat button and the chat box come from a small script. If your website never runs it, nothing shows, and nothing tells you why.

  • The site builder removed the script, or shows the code as text. That happens when code is pasted into an ordinary text block. Paste it into the site builder's code or HTML block, or its footer code setting. Where to paste it on WordPress, Squarespace, Wix and others, at the bottom of the Embed window, has the steps for each.

  • Your site doesn't allow scripts. Use the code without a script:

    1. In the Embed window, choose Inline chat.
    2. Next to No scripts allowed? Use this instead, click Copy.
    3. Paste it where the chat should appear.

The Floating chat button always needs the script, so on such a site, use Inline chat.

  • Your website has a security policy that lists which other sites may load on it (a Content-Security-Policy). It must allow https://www.chirpbuilder.com for scripts and frames, and your own domain too if your code uses it. Whoever manages your website can add it. Chirp Builder itself never stops its chat from showing inside other websites.

The code was changed or pasted in the wrong place

  • Copy the code again instead of editing it: click Embed, then Copy next to Your code. The Chirp's web address in the code (data-chirp="...") must be exact. A wrong address shows "Chirp not found", or nothing at all.
  • Floating chat button: paste it before the closing </body> tag, or in your site's footer code setting.
  • Inline chat: paste it in the page itself, where the chat should appear. In a code setting for the whole site's header, the box has nowhere to show.
  • Code that uses your own domain: with a main address, the code the account owner copies starts with your domain. If you removed that domain, or it isn't connected anymore, the code stops working. Copy the code again. See A main address for a Chirp.
  • The box has the wrong size: Width and Height need a unit, like 480px or 70vh. Without one, the box is 100% wide and 600px high.

The same Chirp's floating code pasted twice on a page still shows one button.

The button or box shows, but stays empty

  • Floating chat button: the chat loads the first time someone clicks the button, so a short wait then is normal.
  • Inline chat: the box loads when it's scrolled into view. Inside a tab, an accordion or a pop-up that starts closed, it may load only once that's opened.
  • "Loading…" doesn't go away: the chat's own scripts aren't running inside the box. Some site builders wrap added code in a frame of their own that can block them. If Preview the embedded chat works, ask your site builder's support how to allow it, or try the Inline chat code without scripts.
  • You can't find the button: something else fixed to the bottom of the page, like a cookie banner or another chat widget, may cover it. In the Embed window, choose the other Position (Bottom left or Bottom right), then copy the code again.

Browsers that block cookies or site data

  • Browsers that block third-party cookies, and private windows, show the chat as usual. An access code or a sign-in is remembered separately inside each website, or, in browsers that also block site data inside other websites (such as Chrome with third-party cookies blocked), only for that visit. Either way, a visitor who entered it on the Chirp's own page is asked once more on yours.
  • Browsers that block all cookies and site data for chirpbuilder.com still show the chat and get answers. An access code or a sign-in then lasts only for that visit.
  • "This page didn't load" with "Your browser may be blocking this site from saving data. Allow it for chirpbuilder.com, then try again." The visitor allows site data for chirpbuilder.com in their browser's settings (or for your own domain, if the page is there), then clicks Try again. Chirp Builder isn't down.

You want to show a Collection

There's no embed code for a Collection. Link to the Collection's page instead (see Share a Collection), or put its Chirps on your website one at a time, each with its own Embed code.

Good to know

  • You never need new code after changes. Embeds show the published version: after Publish changes, reload your website page to see them.
  • The chat on your website keeps no chat list. A conversation ends when the visitor leaves the page, and Reset starts a new one. Chats from the Chirp's own page don't show there.
  • On your website, you're a visitor. Pause this Chirp, the daily limits and an access code apply to you there too. To test as the owner, use the preview in the editor.
  • Team members get the Chirp Builder address in their code, which works too. Only the account owner's code uses a main address.
  • Without a plan, the Embed window shows "Website embedding comes with every Chirp Builder plan." and the Chirps don't answer. See What you can do without a plan.
  • Setting it up from the start: see Put a Chirp on your website.
