Visitor limits and pausing a Chirp

Cap how many messages visitors can send each day, or pause a Chirp, so a busy day can't surprise your OpenRouter bill.

EssentialsCreatorBusinessAcademyFor: Account owner, Workspace admin, Editor

When you're done, your Chirp can't run up more messages a day than you've allowed.

Who can do this: the account owner on any plan, and workspace admins and editors.

Both are in the editor, under 10. Visitor limits: Pause this Chirp (1) and the daily limits (2). They apply as soon as you click Save, with no publishing.

Pause the Chirp (1), or cap the messages a day (2).

Set daily limits

  • Messages per visitor per day: from 1 to 10,000.
  • Messages per day for this Chirp: for everyone together, from 1 to 1,000,000.

Leave a box empty for no limit, and click Save. Days start again at midnight UTC.

When a limit is reached, visitors see:

  • Their own limit: "You've reached today's message limit for this Chirp. Please come back tomorrow."
  • The Chirp's limit: "This Chirp has reached its message limit for today. Please come back tomorrow."

Pause

Turn on Pause this Chirp and click Save. Visitors see "This Chirp is taking a short break. Please check back later." until you turn it off. Nothing is deleted. A paused Chirp shows Paused in the editor and on its card.

What visitors see while a Chirp is paused.

How messages are counted

  • "Per visitor" means per internet connection. People on the same office or school network share one allowance.
  • Every message counts, including asking for a new answer with the regenerate button, and messages whose reply failed.
  • Your preview doesn't count toward the daily limits, and works while the Chirp is paused. On the public page, you count like any visitor.

Other limits that can show

These protect every Chirp, your preview included, and aren't settings:

  • "You've sent a lot of messages. Please wait a bit and try again." (a lot of messages in an hour)
  • "This Chirp is answering a lot of people right now. Please try again in a moment." (many replies at once across all your Chirps; bigger plans allow more)

How long replies can be is under 5. Model, in Max reply tokens. To cap spending on OpenRouter's side too, see Keep your AI spending in check.

If it doesn't work

  • "Messages per visitor per day must be a whole number from 1 to 10,000, or empty for no limit"
  • "Messages per day for this Chirp must be a whole number from 1 to 1,000,000, or empty for no limit"
