My AI app can't connect or can't make changes

Fix Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app when it can't connect to Chirp Builder, asks you to sign in again, or can't build, publish or delete Chirps.

EssentialsCreatorBusinessAcademyFor: Account owner, Workspace admin, Editor, Viewer

When you're done, your AI app is connected to your Chirp Builder account and can make the changes you allow it to.

Who this is for: anyone who connected Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex or another AI app to Chirp Builder. Each person connects their own app to their own account, team members included, so you fix your own connection.

What you see

On Chirp Builder's connect page: a Couldn't connect page with a Go to my dashboard button, and one of these:

  • "This link is missing its connection request. Start again from your AI app."
  • "This connection request has expired or can't be used. Start again from your AI app."
When you see this page, start again from your AI app.

Or, on the Connect (app)? page after you click Allow: "Couldn't save the app's access. Click Allow to try again."

In your AI app: apps usually put Chirp Builder's messages in their own words. Where they talk about "the customer", that's you.

  • It asks you to sign in or reconnect, or reports "Your sign-in has expired." or "This connection has expired or was removed. Connect again."
  • It can't make a change: "This AI app has read-only access to the customer's Chirp Builder account, so it can't make changes. The customer can change its access in Chirp Builder: Settings, Connect your AI app." or "This AI app can create and edit, but not publish, delete or change who can open a Chirp. The customer can do that in Chirp Builder, or change the app's access in Settings, Connect your AI app."
  • It asks for your yes before it publishes or deletes something.
  • "Choose a Chirp Builder plan to create or change Chirps.", or another sentence about a plan.
  • "This Chirp Builder account's access is paused, so this AI app can't make changes. The customer can contact Chirp Builder support to sort it out." See My access is paused.
  • "No Chirp "…" in this account. Call list_chirps to see them. (Chirps in workspaces someone else shared with the customer can't be reached from an AI app.)" for a Chirp you can open in Chirp Builder.

In Settings, under Connected apps: "Couldn't load your connected apps. Refresh the page to try again.", or a red message when you change or disconnect an app (see "Good to know").

Find the cause quickly

Ask your AI app: "Show my Chirp Builder account." If it answers with your name, email and plan, the connection works, and the cause is what the app may do, your plan, or which Chirps it can reach: see the sections below. If it can't answer, or asks you to sign in, see "The connection expired or was removed".

The connect page says the request is missing or expired

The Couldn't connect page means Chirp Builder didn't get a request it can use from your AI app. That happens when the page is opened from a bookmark or a copied link, when the request waited too long (say, while you made an account), or when it was already used.

  1. Click Go to my dashboard, or close the page.
  2. In your AI app, connect again: reconnect the Chirp Builder connector, or remove it and add it again with the address https://www.chirpbuilder.com/mcp.
  3. Log in if Chirp Builder asks, choose what the app may do, and click Allow without leaving the page waiting.

If the Connect (app)? page says "Couldn't save the app's access. Click Allow to try again.", your choice is still there: click Allow again. If it keeps failing, start again from your AI app.

You're signed out, or in the wrong account

  • Signed out: the connect page sends you to log in first, then back to the request. If that took a while, the request may have expired: start again from your AI app.
  • The wrong account: the bottom of the Connect (app)? page says "Signed in as" and an email. If it isn't the account you want, click Use a different account before Allow. You log out, log in with the other account, and come back to the same request.
  • You already allowed the wrong account: in that account, open Settings, find Connect your AI app, and click Disconnect beside the app under Connected apps. Then remove the Chirp Builder connector in your AI app, add it again, and log in with the right account.

You clicked Cancel, or the page didn't ask

  • Cancel turns the request down, and your AI app says it wasn't allowed. To connect after all, start again from your AI app.
  • An app you allowed before isn't asked again. The page sends you straight back to it, with the access it had. To change that access, use Settings: see the next section.

The app can't make a change

Each connected app has an access level, and Chirp Builder checks it before every change:

  • Read only: it can look but not change anything. It can't test a Chirp either, because a test is a real chat.
  • Create and edit: it can build and change Chirps, but can't publish or delete them, or change who can open one (that includes setting an access code). In an Academy, it can't publish courses, add students, or delete modules and lessons.
  • Create, edit and publish: everything.

To give it more:

  1. Open Settings and find Connect your AI app. The same list is in step 1 on the Import page.

  2. Under Connected apps, choose a level in the menu beside the app (1). You see, for example, "Claude can now: create, edit and publish".

Change what the app may do (1), or disconnect it (2).
  3. Ask your AI app to try again. The new level applies from its next request.

If you'd rather not give the app more, make that change in Chirp Builder yourself. What each level allows in full is in What Actions and connected AI apps can do.

No Connect your AI app card in Settings? You're in a workspace someone shared with you, and Settings says "Switch to one of your own workspaces to see your own settings." Switch with the Workspace box at the top of the menu.

Publishing and deleting wait for your yes

Even with Create, edit and publish, your AI app has to check with you before it publishes a Chirp or its changes, an import or a Collection, switches a Chirp between open, invitation and email access, or sends a real change while testing an Action. In an Academy, the same goes for publishing a course, adding students, and deleting modules and lessons. Setting an access code or adding invited emails on a Chirp that's already published doesn't need your yes.

If it tries without your yes, it's told, for example, "Not published. Ask the customer whether to publish "Study Buddy" as unlisted, then call again with customer_confirmed: true." To delete a Chirp, it has to give the Chirp's exact name: "Not deleted: the name to confirm is "Study Buddy"."

Answer the app's question with a clear yes or no in the chat. Or publish it yourself: see Publish, update or unpublish a Chirp. Chirp Builder can't see your chat, so it relies on the app to ask you. Give Create, edit and publish only to apps you trust.

Building needs a plan

Connecting and looking around work without a plan. Making or changing things doesn't. Your AI app reports one of these:

  • "Choose a Chirp Builder plan to create or change Chirps."
  • "Adding knowledge files needs an active Chirp Builder plan."
  • "Actions need a Chirp Builder plan. The Billing page says how to get one."
  • "Starting from a template needs a Chirp Builder plan. The Billing page says how to get one."
  • "Choose a plan and connect your OpenRouter key so your Chirps can answer." (when it tests a Chirp)

Some things need a bigger plan: "Collections come with the Creator, Business and Academy plans.", "Password, invitation and email access come with the Creator, Business and Academy plans." and "Courses, students and certificates come with the Academy plan."

Plans can't be bought online yet. Email joanaltres@dfydata.com, or write to us from Help about Plan and billing. We set the plan on your account by hand, and your AI app can build as soon as it's set. See What you can do without a plan.

The connection expired or was removed

Your AI app asks you to sign in or reconnect, or reports "This connection has expired or was removed. Connect again." This happens after someone clicks Disconnect in Settings (it stops working straight away), or when the app's sign-in to Chirp Builder ended.

  1. In your AI app, remove the Chirp Builder connector.
  2. Add it again with https://www.chirpbuilder.com/mcp, log in, and click Allow.

"Your sign-in has expired." usually sorts itself out, because AI apps renew their sign-in on their own. If it doesn't, do the same two steps.

If your AI app fails before any Chirp Builder page opens, check that you pasted the address exactly. If it still fails, write to us with the app's message, word for word.

A team member's AI app can't reach shared Chirps

An AI app works only on the account that connected it. A team member who connects their own app works on their own Chirps and workspaces, never on workspaces someone shared with them.

  • Asking it to change a Chirp in a shared workspace gives "No Chirp "Harbor Dental Front Desk" in this account. Call list_chirps to see them. (Chirps in workspaces someone else shared with the customer can't be reached from an AI app.)"
  • Chirps it makes go to one of the team member's own workspaces and need their own plan. Without one: "Choose a Chirp Builder plan to create or change Chirps."

The Import page says so while a shared workspace is open:

In a shared workspace, your AI app still works on your own account.

To change Chirps in a shared workspace, work on them in Chirp Builder, or ask the account owner to connect their own AI app. For courses in a shared Academy, see What Actions and connected AI apps can do.

The workspace is paused

When your plan has fewer workspaces than you have, the extra ones are paused. Your AI app sees them marked "(paused: not in the current plan)". Making a Chirp in one gives "This workspace is paused on your current plan. Use another workspace, or upgrade.", and testing a Chirp there gives "This Chirp's workspace isn't included in your current plan, so its Chirps can't answer. Upgrade, move its Chirps to a workspace that works, or delete a workspace you don't need."

Ask your AI app to use another workspace, or fix the paused one: see Workspaces: what they are and how many each plan has. Once your plan includes it again, it works within about a minute.

Good to know

  • Messages in Settings: "Couldn't load your connected apps. Refresh the page to try again." means the list didn't load, not that nothing is connected. "Couldn't disconnect Claude. Refresh the page and try again." means the app is still connected: refresh and click Disconnect again. "Couldn't save the app's access. Please try again." means the level didn't change: choose it again.
  • Tests have limits. Action tests your AI app runs count toward your 60 tests an hour, together with the editor's: "You've run 60 tests this hour. Try again at the start of the next hour." Testing a Chirp is a real chat on your OpenRouter key, so key problems show up there: see My Chirp says my AI key isn't working or has no credit.
  • If your account's access is paused, your AI app can still look but can't change or publish anything: "This Chirp Builder account's access is paused, so this AI app can't make changes. The customer can contact Chirp Builder support to sort it out." See My access is paused.
  • A message you don't recognize may come straight from our systems. Copy it word for word and ask us.
  • To connect for the first time, see Connect Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app. For what MCP is and how moving GPTs works, see What MCP is, and moving GPTs with Claude or ChatGPT.
