Who can open a Chirp: password, invitations or email

Put a password, an invite list or an email sign-in in front of a Chirp, and see who signed in.

CreatorBusinessAcademyFor: Account owner, Workspace admin

When you're done, only the people you choose can chat with your Chirp.

Who can do this: on the Creator, Business and Academy plans, the account owner and workspace admins. Editors don't see this setting.

Choose who can open it

  1. In the editor, under 8. Sharing, find Who can open this Chirp. A new Chirp needs saving first.
  2. Choose one (1):
    • Anyone with the link: no sign-in.
    • Password: visitors enter a password you choose, at least 6 characters.
    • Invited people only: only the email addresses you list. They confirm their email with a code.
    • Email required: anyone who confirms their email with a code. You see who signed in.
  3. For a password, type it. Then click Use this setting (2).
Choose an option (1), then click Use this setting (2).

It applies straight away: "Access updated. It applies right away." There's no Save or Publish step. Changing the setting or the password signs out everyone who's signed in.

Invited people only

Paste email addresses, separated by commas or new lines, and click Add to the list. Up to 2,000.

We don't email people when you add them: send them the link yourself. Removing someone from the list stops them at once.

Email required

Anyone can get in by confirming their email. People who signed in lists them, with a CSV download. Visitors are told their email is shared with you; it isn't permission to send them marketing emails. Removing someone from this list doesn't sign them out: change the setting to sign everyone out.

What visitors see

A card with your Chirp's name:

  • Password: "Enter the password to continue."
  • Invited people only or Email required: they enter their email and get a 6-digit code, which works for 15 minutes.
Visitors enter the password before they can chat.

Once in, they stay signed in for 30 days in that browser. Your greeting, welcome and starters appear once they're in. It works in a chat on your website too.

Good to know

  • The access code isn't used while one of these is on: see Ask visitors for an access code.
  • You see the sign-in too when you open the public page. The preview never asks.
  • Collections have the same setting. It protects the Collection's page; each Chirp keeps its own setting and its own link.
  • Email codes depend on Chirp Builder's email service. If it's off, the setting says "Email codes aren't switched on yet, so visitors can't sign in this way for now."
  • If your plan changes to Essentials, the setting you chose keeps working. You can switch back to Anyone with the link, but not change the password.

If it doesn't work

  • "That password isn't right." After 10 wrong tries in an hour: "Too many tries. Please wait a while and try again."
  • "That code has expired. Ask for a new one." or "Too many wrong codes. Ask for a new one."
  • No code arrives: it can take a minute; check the spam folder, or click Send it again. With Invited people only, an address that isn't on the list gets no email, though the card still says a code is on its way "if" the address is on the list: check the address is on your list exactly.
  • "Too many tries. Please wait a while and try again." also comes after asking for codes too often: 5 an hour for one address.
  • "Email sign-in isn't switched on yet. Please check back soon." Email codes aren't available right now. Use a password for the moment.
  • "Password, invitation and email access come with the Creator, Business and Academy plans." On Essentials, use an access code.
