Use your own domain
Show your Chirps at an address you own, like chat.yourbusiness.com, by adding one record at your domain provider.
When you're done, your Chirps open at your own address, with HTTPS.
Who can do this: the account owner. Your plan includes a number of domains for your whole account; the card shows how many you've used.
Connect a domain
-
Open Settings and find Custom domains. If you have more than one workspace, first switch to the one whose Chirps the domain should show.
-
Type the domain, like
chat.yourbusiness.com, and click Add domain. A subdomain such as chat. or ai. is easiest, and your main website keeps working. -
The domain shows Waiting for DNS (1). At your domain provider (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare…), add the record shown (2). Click a value to copy it.
- For a subdomain: type CNAME, name
chat(the part before your domain), valuecname.vercel-dns.com. - For a whole domain: type A, name
@, value76.76.21.21. - If a TXT record is shown too, add it as well. Always copy the values the card shows: they can change while the domain connects.
While it waits (1), add the record shown (2); Check now (3) checks again. - For a subdomain: type CNAME, name
-
Wait. Records usually show up within minutes. The checklist follows along: Record added at your domain provider, Vercel sees the record, Secure HTTPS address ready. The status changes to Connecting, then Connected.
While Settings is open, we check every minute and tell you when it's connected. Click Check now (3) to check straight away.
Use it
- Each Chirp is at
https://your-domain/its-web-address. - Once it's Connected, choose what the domain's own home page shows under Home page shows: A list of your public Chirps (in that workspace), or one Chirp.
- A domain belongs to the workspace you added it in, and shows only that workspace's Chirps.
- To make your links and website code use the domain, see A main address for a Chirp (Creator, Business and Academy).
- On Creator and up, your domain's pages take the workspace's public branding: see Public branding and white label.
Remove a domain
Click the bin on its row and confirm: "Your Chirps stop working on it." Any Chirp or Collection that used it as its main address goes back to its Chirp Builder link. Browsers that visited before may still try the old domain for a while.
If your plan changes and includes fewer domains, the newest ones show Not in your plan and stop working until you remove others or upgrade.
If it doesn't work
- Still waiting after a few hours: check the record's name and value exactly, and make sure there's no other record with the same name.
- "You've already added this domain."
- "That domain is connected to another Chirp Builder account."
- "That domain is already connected to another website on Vercel. Remove it there first, then try again."
- "Use your own domain, not a Chirp Builder address"
- No box to add a domain: you've used your plan's domains. "Remove one to add another, or upgrade for more."
- The domain's home page says "This domain isn't connected yet": finish connecting it, or check it's still in your plan. A Chirp's page there says "Chirp not found" instead, which also shows for a Chirp from another workspace.
