Hand a workspace over to a client
Move a finished client workspace, with its Chirps, files, Collections and leads, into the client's own Chirp Builder account.
When you're done, your client has the workspace in their own Chirp Builder account, on their own plan and OpenRouter key, and it has left yours.
Who can do this: the account owner on Business. Workspace admins can't. Your main workspace can't be handed over.
Before you start
- Download the leads if you want a copy: they go to the client. All leads collected in this workspace go, including those from Chirps you move out first. See The Leads page and exporting leads.
- Move out any Chirp you want to keep: see Move a Chirp to another workspace.
- A workspace with Academy courses or students can't be handed over. Remove them on the Academy page first.
- Your client needs a Chirp Builder plan to accept it. See Accept a workspace handoff.
Send the handoff
- Open Settings and find Workspaces.
- Click the handshake button next to the workspace ("Hand over to a client" when you point at it). The panel says "The client gets it in their own Chirp Builder account, on their own plan, and their Chirps answer with their own OpenRouter key. Once they accept, it leaves your account."
- Read Goes to the client and Doesn't move (see below).
- Type the client's email address (1) and, if you like, a note for them (up to 1,000 characters).
- Tick "I understand that when they accept, this workspace and everything above leaves my account. Download the leads first if I want a copy." (2)
- Click Send handoff (3): "Handoff sent. It moves when the client accepts."
Your client gets an email from Chirp Builder, "… is handing "…" over to you", with your note and a link that works for 14 days. If the email can't be sent, the handoff is still made, and you see "Handoff created. Copy the link below and send it to the client. It moves when they accept." with Copy.
What moves and what doesn't
Goes to the client: the workspace's Chirps (published ones keep the same web addresses), knowledge files, saved versions, history and analytics, Collections, folders, leads and lead forms, access settings (passwords, invited people), the workspace's branding and its custom domains.
Doesn't move:
- Email service connections: "credentials never move; leads stop going there".
- The workspace's OpenRouter key, unless the client added it themselves as a member of your team and accepts the workspace as a new workspace.
- Lead webhooks come along switched off, for the client to check.
- Action API keys: the client adds their own after accepting.
- Your team: everyone you gave this workspace loses access to it.
- Your billing, your account key and your other workspaces.
While you wait
The workspace is marked Handoff waiting (1). You can keep working in it: whatever is in it when the client accepts is what moves. The panel says "Waiting for … to accept. You can keep working in the workspace until then."
- Send again (2) emails a new link that works for 14 days. The link sent before stops working.
- Cancel handoff (3): confirm "Cancel this handoff? The link stops working." You see "Handoff cancelled".
After 14 days the workspace is marked Handoff link expired: "The link sent to … has expired. Send it again, or cancel the handoff." A workspace can have one handoff waiting at a time.
When the client accepts
- The workspace leaves your account straight away. There's no undo.
- Your team loses access to it. Anyone who had no other workspace of yours leaves your team.
- You get an email, ""…" now belongs to …", saying "It has left your account, with its Chirps, Collections, leads and settings."
- Under your workspaces, Handoffs keeps a record, for example ""Harbor Dental": Handed over to …" with the date and how many Chirps, Collections and leads moved. Declined and cancelled handoffs are listed there too.
- All workspaces analytics no longer include its Chirps.
- On Business, your event webhooks can send Handoff completed.
If the client clicks Decline, the workspace stays with you, and Handoffs shows "Declined by" and their address.
If it doesn't work
- "Handing a workspace over to a client comes with the Business plan."
- "Your main workspace can't be handed off. Move the Chirps into another workspace first."
- "Enter the client's email address." or "That's your own email address. Enter the client's."
- "This workspace already has a handoff waiting. Cancel it first to send a new one."
- ""…" has an Academy with 2 courses, which can't be handed over to another account. Remove them on the Academy page first, or keep this workspace." This shows in the panel instead of the form.
- "That handoff isn't waiting anymore." The client already accepted or declined it.
- "Couldn't start the handoff." Try again in a minute.
