Study a course

Find your way around a course, finish lessons and pick up where you left off.

EveryoneFor: Students

When you're done, you've worked through the course's lessons and your progress is saved.

Who this is for: students with a place on the course.

Open the course

Go to My courses and click Start, Continue or Open on the course. It opens at the lesson you were on, or the next one to do. Your progress is saved as you go, so you can carry on later on any device you sign in on.

The outline (1) shows what's done and what's next; the bar (2) shows your progress.
  • The outline (1) lists the lessons by module. A tick means done, a circle means open, and a lock means you need to finish the required lessons before it first. Lessons marked "(optional)" never hold you back.
  • The progress bar (2) shows how much of the course you've done.
  • The tutor is on the right. See Ask the course tutor.

On a phone, use the Lesson, Outline and Tutor tabs at the top.

Work through a lesson

A lesson can have text, videos, audio, PDFs and worksheets to download, links that open outside the course, and suggested questions for the tutor. A download link works for an hour after the page opens. If one has stopped working, reload the page to get a fresh one.

When you've finished a lesson, click Mark complete (1). Next (2) and Previous move between lessons; Next stays grayed out while the next lesson is still locked.

Mark complete (1) when you've finished the lesson; Next (2) moves on.

A lesson with a quiz you must pass completes when you pass it: see Take a quiz.

Finishing the course

You've completed the course when every required lesson is done. A banner says so, with a link to your certificate if the course gives one: see Your certificate. You can go back to a completed course any time.
