Build a quiz

Add a graded or practice quiz to a lesson, set the pass mark and attempts, and write the questions or draft them with AI.

AcademyFor: Account owner, Workspace admin, Editor

When you're done, the lesson ends with a quiz that Chirp Builder grades for you. The AI never grades anything.

Who can do this: the account owner and editors, on the Academy plan.

Add a quiz

  1. Open the lesson and scroll to Quiz.
  2. Click Add a quiz to write the questions yourself, or Draft questions with AI to have five drafted from the lesson's text.
  3. Set it up (below), check every question, then click Save lesson.

Draft questions with AI needs a working OpenRouter key and enough text in the lesson to write from. The drafts are only added to the editor: nothing is saved until you click Save lesson, so check and change them first.

Settings

Graded or practice (1), and whether students must pass it (2).
  • Kind (1): Graded counts. Practice (doesn't count) has unlimited tries and always shows the answers.
  • Pass mark (%): the score needed to pass. It starts at 80%.
  • Attempts: how many tries each student gets (1, 2, 3, 5, 10 or unlimited). It starts at 3.
  • Wait between attempts (minutes): how long a student waits before trying again.
  • After submitting, students see: their score, the right answers and explanations; their score, with the answers once they pass; or only their score.
  • Time limit (minutes, optional): leave it empty for no limit.
  • The tutor during the quiz: gives hints but never the answers (the usual setting), stays off until they submit, or answers as usual.
  • Must pass to complete the lesson (2): students complete the lesson by passing, so in a course whose lessons open in order, the lessons after it open only after a pass. Off, the quiz still counts in your results but doesn't hold anyone back.
  • Shuffle questions and Shuffle choices: each student gets them in a different order.

Write the questions

Tick every right answer, and add an explanation students see afterwards.
  1. Choose the question type: One right answer, More than one right answer or True or false.
  2. Type the question and the choices. Add a choice adds another, up to 10.
  3. Mark the right answer, or tick every right answer for More than one right answer. For those, choose whether students need All right picks for the point or get Partial credit.
  4. Add an explanation if you like. Students see it after submitting, depending on the setting above.

Add a question adds another, up to 100. The arrows move a question, and the bin removes it. Remove quiz takes the quiz off the lesson; students' past results are kept.

Good to know

  • A published course gets the new or changed quiz when you publish the changes.
  • A student who uses all their attempts without passing a quiz they must pass can't complete the lesson. To give them more tries, raise Attempts and publish the changes; that gives every student more tries.
  • If the lesson is optional, passing its quiz isn't needed to finish the course. The check before publishing points this out, and also a pass mark of 0%.
  • To see how students did, see See quiz results.
