When you're done, your Chirp answers from the up-to-date file, or no longer uses the old one.

**Who can do this:** the account owner on any plan, and workspace admins and editors.

## Replace a file with a new version

Use this when a file has changed, like a new price list.

1. In **4. Knowledge**, find the file and click its replace button (1), the two arrows.
2. Choose the new file.
3. While it works, the row shows the new file's name followed by "(replacing" and the old name. When
it's done, a message says the old file was replaced.

The file keeps its place in the list and takes the new file's name. The Chirp uses the old text until the
new text is ready. A replacement doesn't count toward the 20 files, and it only needs storage for the
difference in size.

## Remove a file

1. Click the file's remove button (2), the bin.
2. Confirm: "Your Chirp stops using it right away, also for visitors. This can't be undone."

## Good to know

- **Both apply straight away**, for visitors too. There's nothing to save or publish.
- **Saved versions don't include files**, so going back to an earlier version doesn't bring a removed
file back. Keep your own copy of files you might need again.
- The Chirp's history notes each change, like "Replaced the knowledge file …". See
[See what changed in a Chirp](https://www.chirpbuilder.com/help/chirps/history).
- Removing a file frees its storage: see [Knowledge storage and your plan's limit](https://www.chirpbuilder.com/help/knowledge/storage).
