# Reset or change your password

> Get a reset link by email when you've forgotten your password, or change it from Settings while you're logged in.

When you're done, you can log in with your new password.

**Who this is for:** anyone with a Chirp Builder account. Academy students don't have a password for
their Academy: see [Sign in to an Academy](https://www.chirpbuilder.com/help/academy-students/sign-in).

## If you've forgotten it

1. On the log-in page, click **Forgot password?**, next to **Password**.
2. The page says "Reset your password" and "We'll email you a link to set a new password." Type your
   **Email** (1) and click **Send reset link** (2).

3. "Check your email for a reset link." The page goes back to the log-in form.
4. Open the email and click its link. **Set a new password** opens and says "Pick something you'll
   remember."
5. Type a **New password** (1) of at least 8 characters and click **Save password** (2). "Password
   saved." Your dashboard opens, and you're logged in.

## Change it while you're logged in

1. Open **Settings**. At the bottom of the first card, next to **Password**, click **Change password**.
2. **Change your password** opens. Type your **Current password**, then a **New password**, and click
   **Save password**.

Forgot your current password? Click **Reset it by email** under the box, and use the email link
instead.

## Good to know

- **Use the email address you log in with.** The page shows the same message whether or not that
  address has an account, so check you typed it correctly.
- **Each link works once.** To try again, send a new one.
- **Your email address doesn't change.** To change it, see
  [Change your name, username or email](https://www.chirpbuilder.com/help/account-billing/profile).

## If it doesn't work

- **"This link has expired or was already used. Ask for a new one."** Click **Ask for a new link**: the
  log-in page opens on the reset form, so you can send a new one.
- **"Open this page from the link in your email."** The page was opened without the link, so the box
  stays greyed out. Click the link in your newest reset email.
- **"Too many emails were sent. Wait a minute and try again."**
- **"Your current password isn't right. Type it again, or reset your password by email."** When you
  change it from Settings, type the password you log in with now.
- **No email?** Check your spam folder, wait a minute, then send it again.
- **A password shorter than 8 characters:** your browser asks for a longer one.
- **Saving fails with another message:** log out, then use **Forgot password?** on the log-in page.
