When you're done, you have a place on the course and can start it.

**Who this is for:** students.

Every course has a page with what's inside and a **Take this course** box. What the box offers depends on
how the teacher lets people join.

## You were given a place

If your teacher added you, you may have an email: "You're invited to" the course, with a link. Open the
course's page, **Sign in to start** with that email address, then click **Start the course**. Your
courses are also under **My courses** once you sign in.

## Ask for a place

On some courses, you ask and the teacher decides.

1. Open the course's page and sign in.
2. Click **Ask for a place**.

![The Sourdough Starter course page while signed in: the course's description and outline, and a Take this course box with an Ask for a place button.](https://mjmtbasmrtksluvlnema.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/help-media/web-optimized/academy-students/get-a-place/SS-STU-015-01__ask-for-a-place__academy__desktop__v01.webp?v=af5fdac087)

The page then says you asked, and the course shows under **My courses** as **Asked to join**. When the
teacher says yes, we email you a link to the course. If they say no, you don't get an email, and the
course page offers **Ask for a place** again.

## Join with a course code

If your teacher gave you a course code, open the course's page, sign in, type the code and click
**Join the course**.

## What the box can also say

- **"Places on this course come from" the Academy:** you need a place from the teacher. Ask them for one.
- **"This course is part of your learning path. It opens when you finish" another course:** finish that
one first. See [My courses and learning paths](https://www.chirpbuilder.com/help/academy-students/my-courses).
- **"Your place on this course has ended":** contact the teacher if you think it's a mistake.
